Painting by Wallinger highlights the governments proposed art cuts

Turner prize winner, Mark Wallinger, has highlighted the effects of a cut in the governments proposed art budget by painting a copy of The Fighting Temeraire, by Turner, with a section cut from the painting that highlights the proposed 25% cut.

The new work by Wallinger titled Reckless shows that:

“The arts are incredibly important to this country. They are probably the biggest success story of the past 15 years or so. It just seems a completely false economy to cut that much so savagely. That was what inspired the work.”

He also stated:

“I describe the cuts as a reckless adventure. In fact temeraire means reckless in French and by removing the obsolete ship from the scene I am rendering the painting wreckless.”
